Myanmar’s Department of Meteorology and Hydrology reported that 36 aftershocks, with magnitudes ranging from 2.8 to 7.5, have occurred as of Monday morning. These aftershocks followed a powerful 7.7-magnitude earthquake that struck Myanmar at 12:51 p.m. local time last Friday, according to the Xinhua news agency.

As of Sunday, Myanmar’s State Administration Council reported that approximately 1,700 people have died, 3,400 have been injured, and 300 are still missing following the massive earthquake. The earthquake, followed by a 6.4 magnitude aftershock minutes later, struck Myanmar’s Mandalay region, causing widespread casualties and damage across multiple countries. The epicenter of the earthquake was located about 20 km from Mandalay, Myanmar’s second-largest city, which has a population of 1.5 million.

In response to the devastation, the National Disaster Management Committee declared a state of emergency across the Sagaing Region, Mandalay Region, Magway Region, northeastern Shan State, the capital Nay Pyi Taw, and Bago Region. Rescue operations are still underway, and international relief efforts are being mobilized rapidly to address the urgent needs of those affected.

Several key roads connecting Mandalay and Yangon in the south were damaged or blocked, and airports in Mandalay and Nay Pyi Taw were temporarily shut down, with all flights canceled.

Photos and videos shared on social media have shown significant structural damage to buildings, temples, and historical sites in the Mandalay region, including the Mandalay Palace and the Mahamuni Pagoda. According to the United States Geological Survey, this earthquake is the strongest of the year so far.

The tremors were felt across several neighboring countries, including Thailand, Vietnam, Laos, and southwest China. In Thailand, the earthquake left 10 people dead, 42 others injured, and 78 still missing in the capital, Bangkok.

Authorities reported Saturday that the tremors also affected northern provinces such as Chiang Mai and Mae Hong Son, where some tourist attractions in Pai District have collapsed. In response to the devastation, Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra declared a state of emergency in Bangkok.

In a show of solidarity, India swiftly mobilized rescue teams and humanitarian aid to assist Myanmar. India’s quick response helped in evacuation efforts and provided much-needed support to the displaced population.

As the situation continues to unfold, the international community is working together to provide relief and help those affected by this devastating disaster.-IANS
