On World Children’s Day, we explore an important issue – the impact of digital technology on children’s physical activity levels. Living in the social realm, there’s an ongoing discussion about whether kids are engaging in the right physical activities or simply lounging on the couch.
Additionally, concerns are rising about children complaining of back and muscle pain at an early age. However, with information just a tap away, it’s great to see that physical fitness is now being given top priority. We heard from Andrei Robu, Founder of Shape Up Fitness L.L.C., which includes Shape Up Fitness, Dubai Kids Coach, and Dubai Ladies Coach, who explained the percentage of children actively engaged in sports activities.
He said, “From my experience, I’ve observed that the percentage of children actively engaged in sports is improving, but it still has room to grow. In Dubai, where Shape Up Fitness operates, we see a growing number of parents encouraging their children to take up sports like martial arts or fitness training. However, I would estimate that less than 50% of children consistently participate in sports activities.”
Andrei emphasized that factors like digital distractions and demanding academic schedules often deter kids from being active. His focus is on creating engaging, family-friendly, and adaptable programs that fit into busy lifestyles; he has introduced initiatives like “father and son” or “siblings training together” sessions designed to make fitness a family activity, increasing overall participation.
Speaking about how the spark for fitness in children and adults is flourishing in the UAE, Robu further noted, “When Shape Up Fitness was first envisioned by myself, Andrei Robu, and my wife, Viktoriia Mikhtan, as the company’s co-founders and current managers, we wanted it to be much more than just a fitness company. We aspired to create a transformative source for both kids and adults. For adults, we focus on body shaping—whether it’s building muscles or achieving weight loss. For kids, it’s about mind shaping—developing resilience, confidence, and discipline that will serve them throughout their lives.”
He believes physical activity for children is something bigger than just workouts and routines. “It’s about a mind-body shaping journey, where transformation goes beyond the physical and reaches into mental and emotional well-being. That vision drives everything we do,” he added.
On a general note, children and parents in the UAE have now taken a step forward in encouraging the idea of personalized, purpose-driven training that meets their unique needs, helping them develop a sense of community and confidence. “They learn discipline, teamwork, and resilience, which are key to handling life’s challenges. Whether it’s kickboxing or a simple fitness routine, these activities lay the foundation for a healthier and happier mindset,” Andrei concluded.
