Dubai is gearing up to commemorate the 10th anniversary of its tram service on November 11, marking a decade of impressive operational achievements. Since its inception, the Dubai Tram has completed 950,000 journeys, welcoming over 60 million passengers, and witnessing a 850 percent surge in ridership. The service has also maintained an impressive punctuality rate of 99.9 percent.
Dubai Crown Prince Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum announced plans to introduce all-electric trackless and autonomous trams at eight locations across the emirate. Following a visit to the RTA headquarters, he instructed the authority to explore the feasibility of this eco-friendly transport system. “On the occasion of Dubai Tram’s 10th anniversary, we have directed the RTA to study the implementation of the Trackless Tram project,” Sheikh Hamdan said on social media.
These initiatives highlight Dubai’s commitment to sustainable and innovative transport solutions as it continues to enhance its public transportation network.
He reviewed plans for expanding the city’s public transport infrastructure. The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) is set to extend Dedicated Bus and Taxi Lanes over the next two years, adding six new routes covering 13 kilometers.
This expansion aims to increase ridership by 10 percent, enhance bus arrival rates by 42 percent, and reduce bus travel times by 41 percent. The initiative is designed to promote public transport use and ease traffic congestion while supporting Dubai’s ambitious Self-Driving Transport Strategy 2030. The economic benefits of this project are estimated at AED 2.3 billion over the next decade.
