The increase in traffic and travel has made it difficult for UAE residents to cope with their daily routines. While companies are implementing various schemes and benefits, many employees still feel overwhelmed and exhausted. A recent study suggests that 38% of the UAE’s working population is resorting to sleep as a means of escape from the daily grind. What factors are contributing to this increased need for relaxation?

Thomas Kurian, Hotel Manager, Leva Hotel, said, “The reasons behind this are multifaceted. The UAE’s work culture is known for its intensity and high expectations are the norm.” He admitted that many employees commute long distances, especially those living outside Dubai, further stretching their time and making it difficult to engage in hobbies or spend quality time with family.

Kurian emphasized that some surveys indicate that nearly 4 out of 10 employees, struggle to balance their work and personal lives which often leads to feelings of burnout and stress.

“Many employees report feeling exhausted at the end of the day, with little time for relaxation. As a result, their homes have become primarily places for sleep rather than for unwinding and rejuvenation,” noted Thomas.

Thomas further believes that the growing recognition of the “importance of wellness” is changing this trend as employees continue to “prioritize work-life balance” and companies are also implementing “health-focused initiatives such as flexible working hours, mental health support, and fitness programs” that can help them reclaim their time and improve their overall well-being.

“When companies prioritize wellness, they empower employees to feel more refreshed and energized, both professionally and personally. By addressing these needs, businesses can create a healthier, more engaged workforce that is better equipped to sustain long-term success,” Kurian concluded.

The discussion arises following concerns about the impact of extreme travel fatigue and exertion on UAE employees. Some believe that a significant portion of the day is lost dealing with traffic congestion.
