Robert F Kennedy Jr Appointed to Lead Health and Human Services
President-elect Trump has appointed Robert F Kennedy Jr, an environmental advocate and known vaccine skeptic, as the Secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). Speaking about his choice, Trump stated, “Kennedy will restore these agencies to the traditions of gold standard scientific research, and beacons of transparency, to end the chronic disease epidemic, and to Make America Great and Healthy Again!”

Role of US Health Secretary
The US Health Secretary oversees a wide range of public health responsibilities, from food safety to medical research and welfare programs. If confirmed, Robert F Kennedy Jr will also oversee the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), America’s national public health agency.

A History of Controversial Health Claims
Kennedy has a reputation for spreading health information that scientists have repeatedly disputed. His stance has raised questions about his ability to lead public health agencies effectively.

Personal Battle with Addiction
Kennedy may bring a personal commitment to addressing the nation’s drug addiction crisis, having been a heroin addict for 14 years in his youth. In a 2023 interview with the Daily Mail, he shared his concerns, saying, “We’re losing a whole generation of youth. We lost 106,000 people this year alone from fentanyl deaths,” though the actual number was even higher at over 107,500.
