UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer has vowed to put Ukraine at the forefront of discussions during the G20 Summit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Speaking to the media, Starmer highlighted the global importance of addressing Russia’s war in Ukraine, which is nearing its 1,000th day. He emphasized the need for “full support for as long as it takes,” pointing out the troubling involvement of North Korean troops alongside Russia.
Despite German Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s plans to engage directly with Russian President Vladimir Putin, Starmer ruled out such communication. “I have no plans to speak to Putin,” he said, citing the critical need to focus on security concerns in Europe and the Indo-Pacific.
Key Leaders Convene Amid Rising Tensions
World leaders, including China’s Xi Jinping, India’s Narendra Modi, and outgoing U.S. President Joe Biden, are attending the summit. However, Russian President Putin has opted to send Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov as his representative.
The summit coincides with Russia’s largest missile and drone strike on Ukraine since August, targeting critical energy infrastructure. Adding to the tension, U.S. President-elect Donald Trump has indicated a potential shift in Washington’s approach to supporting Ukraine, casting uncertainty over future aid.
G20 Divisions Challenge Unity
The G20 faces significant division on key issues, including Ukraine, climate change, and economic inequality. Argentina’s President Javier Milei, a close ally of Trump, is complicating efforts to achieve consensus. French President Emmanuel Macron has intervened with diplomatic efforts, meeting Milei to address these challenges ahead of the summit.
A Crucial Gathering Amid Global Uncertainty
As the G20 unfolds, the summit reflects a pivotal moment for global leadership. With the backdrop of escalating conflict in Ukraine and shifting geopolitical alliances, the discussions hold critical implications for international cooperation and economic stability.
