In a new initiative to enhance compliance with public transport regulations, the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) in Dubai has announced plans to use artificial intelligence (AI) technology to detect smoking violations inside taxis. The AI-powered in-car cameras will monitor passengers, ensuring that the ban on smoking in public transport vehicles is strictly enforced.
While the specific details of the technology have not yet been disclosed, the RTA has confirmed that this move is part of broader efforts to improve hygiene and cleanliness standards within taxis. According to a report by Khaleej Times, the increased use of AI will also be coupled with intensified inspections to promote vehicle cleanliness.
Adel Shakri, Director of Planning and Business Development at the Public Transport Agency, RTA, explained that awareness and training programs for drivers will be an essential part of the initiative. These programs aim to ensure that cleanliness standards are maintained and that drivers are fully equipped to support the new measures.
Shakri added, “This initiative will include a monthly operational index that monitors both vehicle and driver cleanliness, along with tracking cleanliness-related incidents for every 100,000 Hala Taxi trips. Additionally, starting in 2025, customer satisfaction surveys and mystery shopper evaluations will be conducted twice a year, with a specific focus on the cleanliness of vehicles and drivers.”
