Today marks International Children’s Day, and we’re addressing a very important issue that many parents are grappling with. Considering tight work schedules, growing expenses, and high expectations, many parents feel they’re lacking the time to look after their kids. But is the lack of attention causing an impact on the child? Here’s what experts suggest:
Antony Bainbridge, Head of Clinical Services & Clinical Lead at Resicare Alliance, highlights why children at a very early age are facing mental health issues. He said, “Children today are facing mental health challenges at increasingly younger ages due to a complex interplay of societal, familial, and individual factors. Some key reasons behind this concerning trend include increased stress and pressure in terms of academics.”
We discussed whether kids are engaged in productive activities while their parents are away. Bainbridge added, “Children are exposed to screens and digital media from an early age. Overuse of technology can affect attention spans, disrupt sleep, and create dependency, all of which are disruptive to a child’s circadian rhythm.”
There’s also an indirect influence from social media. Although young children may not be on social media themselves, they can be indirectly affected by it. “For instance, they may see their parents absorbed in social media or face pressures related to the digital sharing of family life, creating a sense of being watched,” said Antony.
Schools have also seen a shift toward more rigorous academic standards, often starting in nursery school. This pressure can create stress for young children who are still developing basic social and emotional skills. Many children are encouraged to excel early in sports, arts, or academics. Parents may feel the need to start structured activities early, which, while well-intentioned, can lead to burnout or feelings of inadequacy in children who feel they cannot meet these expectations.
For some children, family stress and changing dynamics are also taking a toll. In the UAE, and around the world, many families today face economic pressures, with both parents working long hours. This can limit the time spent on bonding and nurturing activities, potentially affecting children’s emotional security.
Considering tight schedules, Antony adds, “Parental stress, anxiety, and other mental health issues can impact children. Children are highly perceptive of their parents’ emotions and may absorb that stress.”
