Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky, in an interview with Fox News, emphasized the critical importance of U.S. funding in Ukraine’s fight against Russian aggression. He warned that without Washington’s support, Ukraine would face severe setbacks, potentially losing the war.
Zelensky highlighted the necessity of unity between Ukraine, the U.S., and Europe, describing it as vital for maintaining strength against Russia. “It would be very dangerous if we lose unity in Europe, and what is most important is unity between Ukraine and the United States,” he said.
The remarks come as U.S. President-elect Donald Trump reiterates his campaign promise to end American involvement in foreign wars. Trump has claimed he could resolve the Russia-Ukraine conflict within 24 hours, though specifics remain unclear.
When asked about Trump’s potential to influence Russian President Vladimir Putin, Zelensky expressed cautious optimism, saying, “It will not be simple, but yes, he can because he is stronger than Putin. Putin is weaker than the United States. The President of the United States has the strength, authority, and weapons.”
Escalation on the Battlefield
Ukraine has faced escalating challenges in its ongoing counteroffensive. On Tuesday, Kyiv deployed U.S.-supplied long-range missiles against Russian targets for the first time, following Washington’s authorization.
Meanwhile, Russia has significantly advanced along the front lines, with the Institute for the Study of War (ISW) reporting that Russian forces have seized 2,700 square kilometers of Ukrainian territory in 2024 — a stark increase from the 465 square kilometers captured in 2023.
Zelensky acknowledged the difficulty of the current phase of the war, describing the battlefield situation as “very difficult.” He also criticized German Chancellor Olaf Scholz for engaging with Putin over the phone, calling it a “Pandora’s box” that could undermine efforts to isolate the Russian leader.
U.S. Military Aid and International Relations
President Joe Biden has pledged additional support, including anti-personnel land mines, to aid Ukraine’s defense efforts. Despite these measures, Zelensky stressed the limitations of Ukraine’s domestic production capabilities and its reliance on foreign aid to sustain the fight.
