Trump names Pam Bondi as his pick for attorney general

President-elect Donald Trump has selected former Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi as his new nominee for Attorney General, hours after Matt Gaetz withdrew from consideration.

Gaetz Drops Out Amid Senate Approval Issues

On Thursday evening, Trump announced that Bondi would be his new choice for Attorney General, following the withdrawal of former Rep. Matt Gaetz, who had been initially tapped for the role the week before. Gaetz, whose prospects for Senate confirmation had faced growing obstacles, pulled out after Trump informed him that he did not have the votes needed for confirmation.

“For too long, the partisan Department of Justice has been weaponized against me and other Republicans – Not anymore,” Trump wrote on Truth Social. “Pam will refocus the DOJ to its intended purpose of fighting crime and making America safe again. I have known Pam for many years—She is smart and tough, and is an AMERICA FIRST Fighter, who will do a terrific job as Attorney General!”

Bondi: A Trusted Trump Ally

Bondi had been under consideration for the position before Trump selected Gaetz, and some sources had indicated that Bondi was one of Trump’s preferred choices for the role. She has maintained close ties with Trump throughout his career, having worked as part of his legal team during his first Senate impeachment trial and as a strong ally since his 2016 campaign.

Trump’s personal relationship with Bondi and her experience as the Attorney General of Florida were key factors in her selection. After Gaetz’s withdrawal, it was quickly clear that Bondi would be the next choice. Trump met with her at Mar-a-Lago before making the official announcement.

Gaetz’s Withdrawal and Controversies Surrounding His Nomination

Gaetz’s nomination had encountered serious challenges due to growing pressure from lawmakers, including members of his own party, demanding the release of a House Ethics Committee report into allegations of sexual misconduct. While Gaetz has vehemently denied the allegations, including the claim of sexual relations with a minor, the uncertainty surrounding the investigation weakened his chances for Senate approval.

Trump reportedly called Gaetz on Thursday, informing him that he lacked the votes in the Senate. Gaetz announced on social media that he would decline the nomination and expressed support for Bondi’s selection, calling it “a stellar choice.”

Relief Among Trump Allies

Bondi’s selection has been met with relief among Trump allies, many of whom believe she will face less resistance in the Senate than Gaetz. Bondi’s background as the former Attorney General of Florida and her established relationships with lawmakers in Washington are seen as key advantages in her confirmation process.

“Pam is a solid choice,” one Trump ally said. “We feel much better about her chances.” Bondi’s nomination is expected to have a smoother path through the Senate, given her experience and support in Washington.

Bondi’s Controversial Past and Relationship with Trump

Bondi’s potential nomination has faced scrutiny in the past, particularly due to a $25,000 donation made by Trump’s foundation to Bondi’s 2014 reelection campaign. The donation led to accusations that Bondi had declined to investigate fraud allegations against Trump University in exchange for the contribution. However, a Florida ethics panel cleared Bondi of any wrongdoing.

Despite this controversy, Bondi remained a staunch supporter of Trump, working as a legal advisor in the White House and defending him during his first impeachment trial. She also serves as the chair of the Center for Litigation at the America First Policy Institute, a pro-Trump think tank.

Bondi’s Path Forward

Bondi’s selection is expected to be formally nominated and will require Senate approval. However, many believe her background and strong connections to Trump’s circle give her a clear path to securing the position of Attorney General, a role that will allow her to lead the Department of Justice with a focus on crime and law enforcement.
