U.S. President Joe Biden, on January 15, cautioned that the “soul of America” remains at risk as he prepared to deliver his farewell address to the nation ahead of Donald Trump’s return.
The 82-year-old Democrat is set to deliver a prime-time speech from the Oval Office, highlighting the achievements of his single term in office.
Ahead of the 8 p.m. EST address, Biden released a letter to the American people, subtly criticizing Republican Donald Trump.
“I ran for president because I believed that the soul of America was at stake. The very nature of who we are was at stake. And, that’s still the case,” Biden said in the letter.
“History is in your hands. The power is in your hands. The idea of America lies in your hands. We just have to keep the faith and remember who we are,” he said.
President Biden stated that the United States is stronger now than it was four years ago when the nation faced a “winter of peril” marked by Trump’s tumultuous first term, the Covid-19 pandemic, and what he described as “the worst attack on our democracy since the Civil War.”
Biden took office just days after the January 6, 2021, attack on the US Capitol, when Trump supporters attempted to overturn his election victory.
While he did not mention Trump by name, Biden’s remarks closely mirrored earlier speeches where he stated that his decision to run in the 2020 election was driven by the belief that America’s “soul” was under threat from Trump and his supporters.
