In a significant diplomatic win, the UAE has been elected to the United Nations Commission on Narcotic Drugs (CND) for the 2026–2029 term, representing the Asia-Pacific Group. The election took place at the UN Headquarters in New York, where member states voted to appoint new representatives to the UN’s central policymaking body on global drug issues.
The Commission on Narcotic Drugs, established in 1946 by the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), plays a critical role in shaping international drug policy. It oversees the implementation of various global drug control treaties, and guides collaboration among countries to tackle drug-related challenges. In 1991, its mandate was expanded to also serve as the governing body of the UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC).
The UAE’s successful bid to join the CND highlights the country’s growing global influence, as well as its strong diplomatic ties and leadership in anti-narcotics efforts. Representing the Asia-Pacific Group alongside Pakistan, Kazakhstan, and Kyrgyzstan, the UAE will now participate in shaping drug policies, contributing to resolutions, and guiding the international agenda on narcotics control.
According to the UAE Ministry of Interior, the appointment reflects the nation’s commitment to global security and a balanced approach to drug supply and demand, aligning with its long-standing efforts to enhance international cooperation on narcotics challenges.
The CND meets annually to discuss drug-related trends, pass key resolutions, and implement international action plans. A pivotal moment came in 2019, when the Commission adopted the Ministerial Declaration on Strengthening Action to Combat the World Drug Problem. Member states pledged to intensify their efforts through 2029, with a midterm review taking place in 2024.
By joining the Commission, the UAE reinforces its position as a regional and global actor in international drug policy and continues to promote coordinated, integrated strategies to address one of the world’s most persistent challenges.
