Acting on the directives of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister of the UAE, and Ruler of Dubai, Dubai Municipality has awarded new contracts worth AED 1.439 billion for a series of large-scale stormwater drainage projects under the ambitious ‘Tasreef’ initiative.
The contracts, awarded for four major infrastructure projects, mark a significant step forward in the emirate’s commitment to building climate-resilient, sustainable, and future-ready urban systems.

The newly commissioned works will see the addition of more than 36 kilometers of new stormwater drainage lines across key areas of Dubai, including Nad Al Hamar, Al Garhoud, Al Rashidiya, Al Quoz, Zabeel, Al Wasl, Jumeirah, Al Badaa, and the vicinity of Dubai International Airport.
Over 36 km of New Drainage Lines Planned
These upgrades are designed not only to mitigate flooding risks but also to enhance the operational efficiency of existing drainage networks. All new lines will be linked to the central Tasreef tunnel, Dubai’s largest unified stormwater collection system, making it one of the most operationally efficient systems in the region.
Strategic Goals and Environmental Impact
The projects aim to dramatically increase the drainage system’s discharge capacity by 700% over the next 100 years—and are part of a larger strategy to ensure that Dubai remains at the forefront of urban infrastructure innovation.
In a statement, His Excellency Eng. Marwan Ahmed bin Ghalita, Acting Director General of Dubai Municipality, said the initiative represents a transformative milestone in building Dubai’s resilience against extreme weather events.
“Tasreef is a pioneering and strategic infrastructure project that reflects our commitment to developing integrated, sustainable urban solutions,” he said. “This project is not only scalable over the next century but also aims to lower operational and maintenance costs while increasing the lifespan of our drainage systems.”

A Vision for a More Liveable and Resilient City
Valued at a total estimated investment of AED 30 billion, the Tasreef project is the largest infrastructure project of its kind in Dubai. In addition to capacity enhancements, the initiative seeks to cut construction, operation, and maintenance costs by 20% and extend the lifespan of the stormwater infrastructure network.
The project supports Dubai’s broader vision of becoming one of the most sustainable, resilient, and liveable cities in the world, while setting new benchmarks for urban and spatial planning excellence.
