The Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) has announced that its High Water Usage Alert service has helped prevent 266,706 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions since its launch six years ago, up to December 31, 2024. The innovative service alerts customers to potential leaks or faults in their internal water connections, enabling prompt repairs that help conserve water and reduce the energy required for desalination and distribution.
Since its inception, the system has successfully identified over 2.66 million post-meter water leaks, along with 47,454 defects and 13,835 cases of increased load, highlighting its role in enhancing water efficiency across Dubai.

HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD & CEO of DEWA, stated: “Our smart infrastructure including over 1.2 million smart electricity meters and more than 1.1 million smart water meters — empowers customers to monitor and manage their consumption digitally and proactively. These innovations are key to achieving the goals of the Dubai Demand Side Management (DSM) Strategy 2050, which focuses on sustainable development and resource conservation.”
While DEWA is responsible for maintaining efficiency up to the meter, the High Water Usage Alert feature goes a step further, helping customers detect abnormal consumption levels in real time. Instant notifications are sent if a spike in usage is detected, enabling users to investigate and repair potential leaks within their premises.
The initiative complements DEWA’s broader sustainability efforts, which include providing a smart grid, digital services, and access to energy- and water-saving solutions through the DEWA Smart App. The app also connects users to certified maintenance companies and offers exclusive discounts on eco-friendly products via the DEWA Store.
By equipping customers with smart tools and timely data, DEWA continues to lead the way in environmental stewardship and efficient utility management — helping to reduce waste, lower emissions, and support Dubai’s vision for a greener future.
