A tragic shooting unfolded at Florida State University in Tallahassee on Thursday, leaving two people dead and six others injured, according to authorities.
Police identified the alleged shooter as a 20-year-old male, believed to be a student at the university. Officials say he is the son of a local sheriff’s deputy and had access to one of her firearms—a handgun—which was recovered at the scene.
At a news conference, Sheriff Walt McNeil stated, “The 20-year-old suspect is believed to be a student and the son of a sheriff’s deputy who had access to one of her weapons, a handgun, which was found at the scene.”
Investigators confirmed that none of the individuals shot were students or members of law enforcement.
Authorities said they believe the gunman acted on his own, though the motive behind the attack remains unclear.
