In under a century, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has flourished as the Middle East’s cultural keeper and hub of visionary innovation. The Kingdom began its illustrious journey on the global stage as an abundant oil well, attracting upwards of $440 billion as of early 2024. In the early 2010s, KSA began to redefine its identity and move beyond the title of the world’s petrochemical supplier. In 2024, the Kingdom stands at the helm of the Middle East’s digital transformation.
A walk down memory lane: From Al Najd to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia
In the year 610, the Prophet Muhammad received God’s message to spread Islam and emphasize the unity of Allah. Facing threats to his life, he migrated to Yathrib, now Madinat Al Nabi (the Prophet’s City). This migration marks the beginning of the Islamic lunar calendar.
The Prophet’s migration initiated the spread of Islam from Spain to India, drawing more Muslims to Makkah and Madinah. In the early 1700s, scholar Mohammad bin Abdul Wahhab called for a return to the “true” Islam, allying with Mohammad bin Saud, thus establishing Al Najd, the first Saudi state. After nearly a decade of conflict with the Ottomans, the Al Saud family regained disputed territory and declared Riyadh their capital.
Abdulrahman Al Saud sought refuge with the local Bedouins that inhabited the deserts of the Empty Quarter during the Ottoman turmoil, but his son Abdulaziz recaptured Riyadh, leading to the creation of the modern Saudi state. On September 23, 1932, Saudi Arabia was officially established, adopting Arabic as its national language and the Quran as its constitution.
How the Kingdom Celebrates National Day
Saudi Arabia commemorated its first National Day in 2005. This year, celebrations began on Friday, 20th September across the Kingdom. All major cities and landmarks in Saudi Arabia were lit up with fireworks displays, live music, and air shows. The Saudi Ministry of Human Resources and Social Development announced Sunday, September 22, and Monday, September 23, as official holidays.
Under the leadership of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, Saudi Arabia entered a new era in 2016. With Vision 2030, Saudi leaders envisioned a self-sufficient future that spans beyond the glory of oil.
