Campaigning season is in full swing across the United States as the presidential election is just weeks away. Vice President Kamala Harris is ramping up efforts to woo black and Latino voters after some Democrats suggested that she needs to do more to entice this section of voters to turn out in her support come November.
There’s a reason for Harris’ renewed push to court this section of voters. Recent polling shows that Republican candidate Donald Trump is gaining popularity among black and Latino voters, similar to his performance back in 2016 and 2020.
One New York Times and Siena poll indicated Harris had 78% support among black voters, compared to around 90% support for Democrats in recent elections, with men accounting for most of this drop-off.
Analysts predicted that the November race will be decided by razor-thin margins. Furthermore, any modest gains in key battleground states among black or Latino voters could be the deciding factor for the 2024 US Election.
These key battleground states include Arizona, where nearly one in four voters on 5 November is expected to be Latino. In Georgia, black voters make up about 30% of the total turnout, reports BBC.
Election analysts say that economic woes such as rising costs of living, jobs, inflation along with immigration and border control measures are likely to be the primary concerns of voters going into polling booths.
