A rare celestial event captivated the city on October 17 as a supermoon, a full moon that appeared larger and brighter than usual, illuminated the Dubai sky. Hosted by the Dubai Astronomy Group at the University of Dubai, the event drew a large crowd eager to witness this phenomenon.

For a fee between AED40 and AED80, attendees enjoyed a special viewing session from 6.30 pm to 9.00 pm. The Dubai Astronomy Group provided educational insights, explaining its unique characteristics and significance to astronomers and sky watchers.

Khadijah Al Hariri, Operations Manager at Dubai Astronomy Group said the best thing about the supermoon is that it can be viewed from anywhere, without needing to drive to a specific location. She recommended open areas like beaches for optimal viewing and suggested that 7:00 pm would be the ideal time to witness the moon’s full effect.

Dubai has witnessed a series of celestial wonders in recent months, and the supermoon was a highlight for stargazers. The appearance was noticeably larger and brighter than usual due to its proximity to Earth.

Khadijah explained that a supermoon occurs when the moon is at its closest point to Earth, making it appear larger than normal. Due to this proximity, the moon also appears brighter to the human eye, reported Khaleej Times.
