Despite multiple alerts, illegal street vendors and unauthorized shops remain a concern in the UAE. The Sharjah Municipality recently issued a warning to residents, urging them to avoid buying goods from unregulated markets.
The main risk associated with these vendors is the lack of product safety guarantees. Often, these items are sold at low prices, but they could be replicated or even expired, posing a potential health hazard.
“Don’t be tempted by low prices at the cost of your safety and your family’s well-being,” the Sharjah Municipality advised.
This warning comes after a period of increased enforcement against illegal vendors. In June 2024, authorities across the UAE conducted over 4,000 inspections at local markets, uncovering 620 violations. These inspections resulted in the seizure of hundreds of fake and imitation products and the arrest of violators.
A particularly notable case occurred in Ras Al Khaimah, where authorities discovered two warehouses packed with counterfeit cosmetics. These fake branded products, including shampoo and lipstick, had an estimated value of AED23 million, reports Khaleej Times.
The message from UAE authorities is to steer clear of prioritizing health and safety – avoid buying goods from unregulated sources, and instead go for for reputable retailers.
