On October 28, 2024, France Football held the highly anticipated Ballon d’Or ceremony, recognizing the world’s top football talent. The prestigious award was given to Manchester City and Spain’s standout midfielder, Rodri, whose stellar year included leading Spain to a Euro 2024 title and the Player of the Tournament award, as well as another successful Premier League season with Manchester City. Known for his ability to control the game’s tempo, Rodri dedicated his win to Spanish football and paid homage to legendary Spanish players who never claimed the Ballon d’Or, such as Iniesta, Xavi, and Casillas.

Aitana Bonmati won her second consecutive Women’s Ballon d’Or, thanking her Barcelona teammates for their support in helping her elevate her game.

Real Madrid Boycotts Ceremony

While Real Madrid was expected to attend, the club made headlines by boycotting the ceremony after rumors circulated that Vinicius Jr. would not win the Ballon d’Or. Despite their absence, Real Madrid was named Club of the Year, and Carlo Ancelotti won the Johan Cruyff trophy for Best Coach.

Kane and Mbappe Share Top Scorer Honor

Harry Kane and Kylian Mbappe were jointly awarded the Gerd Muller trophy for top goal-scorer, each tallying 52 goals. Mbappe, however, was not present to accept the award.

Youth and Goalkeeping Accolades

Barcelona’s young star, Lamine Yamal, won the Kopa Trophy for the best under-21 player, marking a historic year with Spain’s Euro 2024 win. Meanwhile, Aston Villa and Argentina’s Emiliano “Dibu” Martinez earned his second Yashin Trophy for Best Goalkeeper after an outstanding Copa America performance.
