The buzz about AI’s role in the job sector is a topic of discussion. While experts believe AI can be used smartly to get work done swiftly, some argue it takes away authenticity. Now, there’s an update on how quickly one may retire in the AI-driven world. Emiratis nearing retirement whose jobs could be replaced by artificial intelligence (AI) may be eligible for an early retirement scheme.

During a Federal National Council session on December 4, Omar Al Olama, Minister of State for Artificial Intelligence, Digital Economy, and Remote Work Applications, emphasized the importance of overcoming society’s fear of AI, stating, “It actually plays a key role in creating new job opportunities,” reports Khaleej Times.

The UAE is exploring various initiatives to leverage AI and boost workforce productivity. While concerns about job displacement persist, Al Olama pointed out that AI has proven to enhance productivity rather than replace jobs.

In 2017, reports predicted 40% of jobs could be lost to AI by 2025. However, these predictions have not materialized. Instead, the UAE focuses on preparing its workforce to embrace emerging technologies and integrate them into daily work routines.

For Emiratis approaching retirement, whose roles may be replaced by AI, the government is considering early retirement options. Furthermore, the minister is planning to introduce a fund to support Emiratis in the AI sector or those whose jobs can benefit from AI. Several initiatives to empower the workforce will be rolled out soon.

This initiative is part of broader efforts to harness AI’s potential to increase productivity and create new opportunities. Al Olama also reflected on how, contrary to earlier fears, AI has helped many workers enhance their productivity. “We did not see mass job losses; on the contrary, many people benefited from AI in increasing their productivity,” he said. The UAE is committed to preparing its workforce to benefit from the AI revolution and apply emerging technologies in their roles.

“For employees nearing retirement, whose jobs may be replaced by AI in the coming years, we can consider early retirement options,” Al Olama added.

The minister also announced plans to establish a fund aimed at enabling and empowering Emiratis in the AI sector. These efforts are part of a broader vision to roll out initiatives that will help prepare the workforce for the opportunities that AI brings.
