In an exciting scientific breakthrough, the long-extinct dire wolf, made famous by Game of Thrones, has been brought back to life after over 10,000 years. Colossal Biosciences, a Dallas-based genetic engineering company, announced on Monday that it has successfully created three dire wolf puppies using de-extinction technologies.
The company achieved this remarkable feat by extracting DNA from a 13,000-year-old tooth and a 72,000-year-old skull to create healthy puppies. Colossal’s CEO, Ben Lamm, celebrated the accomplishment, saying, “Today, our team gets to unveil some of the magic they are working on and its broader impact on conservation.” The dire wolf puppies, named Romulus, Remus, and Khaleesi, are the first animals to be revived from extinction.
Meet Romulus and Remus—the first animals ever resurrected from extinction. The dire wolf, lost to history over 10,000 years ago, has returned. Reborn on October 1, 2024, these remarkable pups were brought back to life using ancient DNA extracted from fossilized remains.

This breakthrough is a milestone for Colossal, which was founded in 2021 by Lamm and biologist George Church to advance species de-extinction. The company had originally set out to bring back the woolly mammoth, but the success with the dire wolf marked their first major achievement.
Colossal is now focused on other ambitious projects, including bringing back the Australian thylacine (Tasmanian tiger) and the dodo. The company is also working on genetically engineering the Woolly Mouse. With a valuation of $10 billion, Colossal Biosciences continues to lead the way in revolutionary biotech efforts aimed at reversing extinction.
