Dubai has approved the state-of-the-art ‘Suspended Transport Systems Project’, a 65-km smart mobility system connecting Umm Suqeim Street, Al Khor and Zabeel.

The announcement was made on Tuesday by the Executive Council of Dubai as part of its new plan aimed at boosting Dubai’s leadership in several sectors over the next decade.

As per Dubai Media Office (DMO), the new system aims to significantly increase the share of autonomous or driverless public transport journeys in the Emirate, targeting 25% of all trips by 2030.

Only the limited details about the innovative transport system are currently available, but the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) had previously displayed at a government summit mock-up models of Dubai Sky pods that are based on suspended transport technology.

One of the salient features of the sky pods is their ability to maintain a horizontal position even on inclines, preventing the ‘roller-coaster’ effect often associated with elevated transport systems. The commuters can expect to enjoy breathtaking views of Dubai’s skyline and urban landscape as pods rise above ground level.
