Dubai is stepping up its commitment to road safety by enhancing infrastructure, updating traffic laws, and leveraging smart technology to reduce road accident fatalities per 100,000 residents. A new traffic law in Dubai outlines stricter penalties across 14 violations, including higher fines for jaywalking and a 30-day vehicle impoundment for serious offenses like phone use while driving, tailgating, and sudden lane deviations.
On Sunday, Dubai Police Commander-in-Chief, Lieutenant General Abdullah Khalifa Al Marri, conducted an annual review of the General Department of Traffic’s workflow, commending the department’s dedication to public safety. During the review, officials presented Al Marri with strategic indicators focused on reducing road fatalities, emphasizing the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and a team of specialized personnel to manage traffic more effectively.
This initiative aligns with efforts across the UAE. In Sharjah, police reported a 15% decrease in traffic fatalities per 100,000 residents in the first half of 2024, accompanied by a 9% decline in accidents per 10,000 vehicles.
Al Marri’s inspection included a look at traffic violation trends from 2023, with reports on the highest infraction areas, common offenses, and types of vehicles frequently involved in accidents. Enforcement teams have also expanded their focus to include pedestrians, public transport, bicycles, and e-scooters. Recently, Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority lifted the e-scooter ban in Metro stations, a move celebrated by commuters for its practicality and efficiency.
Al Marri also reviewed several awareness campaigns conducted over the past year, which addressed pedestrian safety, sudden swerving, speeding risks, and maintaining safe distances. The Ramadan Without Accidents campaign, along with back-to-school safety programs, have reached more than 125,000 people through traffic lectures, exhibitions, and police station visits.
In recognition of collaborative efforts, Al Marri honored the partners and contributors who supported the General Traffic Department’s programs and initiatives aimed at enhancing road safety throughout Dubai.
