Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has expanded its on-demand bus service to include Oud Metha and Barsha Heights, responding to increasing demand for convenient and efficient commuting options. This initiative aims to enhance the city’s public transport network, providing passengers with quick, safe, and seamless travel, while also improving traffic flow in the emirate.
Affordable and Efficient Public Transport Solution
According to Adel Shakri, Director of Planning and Business Development at RTA’s Public Transport Agency, the “Bus on Demand” service offers a smooth and efficient booking experience and is one of Dubai’s most effective shared transport solutions.
“Dubai is experiencing rapid population growth, which presents challenges in reducing congestion and ensuring smooth traffic flow. The ‘Bus on Demand’ service provides an affordable solution, costing just AED 5 per person per trip,” Shakri explained.
RTA has now expanded the service to 10 key areas, adding Oud Metha and Barsha Heights to the existing locations such as Al Barsha, Dubai Silicon Oasis, Al Nahda, Business Bay, and Downtown Dubai. The service is particularly popular among public transport users due to its affordability and convenience.
Smart Technology for Seamless Commuting
The “Bus on Demand” system uses an advanced smart response system that allows passengers to book small public buses via a dedicated mobile app. Commuters can select their starting and destination points, with the app directing the nearest available bus to pick them up. The initiative is designed to improve first- and last-mile connectivity, making it easier for residents to reach the nearest public transport station.
Before launching the service, RTA conducted extensive field research, analyzing factors such as population density, vehicle ownership, public transport accessibility, and commuter preferences. The study also evaluated global best practices from countries like Spain, Germany, the United States, and Finland, ensuring that Dubai’s system meets international standards for comfort, efficiency, and affordability.
How to Use the ‘Bus on Demand’ Service
The service is accessible through the “Dubai Bus On Demand” mobile app, available on Apple Store and Google Play Store. The minibuses, which accommodate up to 13 passengers, operate within designated geographical zones. Through the app, drivers can communicate with passengers, ensuring efficient pick-up and drop-off points close to their locations.
With this expansion, RTA continues to enhance Dubai’s smart transport ecosystem, making public transit more accessible, cost-effective, and efficient for residents and visitors alike.
