In an innovation, Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has announced the completion of rapid traffic improvements along Sheikh Zayed Road, aiming to enhance the road network’s efficiency and capacity. With this, there will be reduced congestion at major intersections; improved traffic flow, and the highest safety standards.

Travel Time Down From 5 Minutes to 2 Minutes

As part of the project, several key locations along Sheikh Zayed Road have been expanded and developed. One of the notable developments includes the expansion of the service road adjacent to the Financial Centre Metro Station towards Abu Dhabi.

The road’s capacity has been increased by 25%, with the number of lanes expanding from three to four. This upgrade allows the road to accommodate up to 3,200 vehicles per hour, compared to the previous 2,400 vehicles. The improvement has alleviated congestion, reduced vehicle queues, and decreased travel time from 5 minutes to just 2 minutes.

Improved Traffic Overlap and Reduced Travel Times

The RTA has also worked on improving the traffic overlap section between Business Bay Street and Financial Centre Street heading towards Dubai. The extended overlap distance has effectively reduced traffic density and enhanced service levels, further optimizing travel times. As a result, the duration of travel along Sheikh Zayed Road has been reduced by 25%, cutting travel time from 4 minutes to 3 minutes.

Sheikh Zayed Road, a crucial economic artery that connects key residential and commercial areas, including landmarks like the Dubai International Financial Centre, Burj Khalifa, and Dubai Mall, has been significantly upgraded. The road serves as a vital hub for daily commuting and commercial activities, supporting international companies, banks, and entertainment facilities.

Ahmed Al Khazaimi, Director of Traffic at the Traffic and Roads Agency, emphasized the RTA’s commitment to improving traffic flow across Dubai. “RTA reaffirms its commitment to enhancing traffic flow and improving the efficiency of vehicle movement across various areas of Dubai, particularly on Sheikh Zayed Road. This is achieved through the implementation of a range of innovative traffic improvements and solutions that support its vision of providing a smooth and safe transportation experience for vehicle owners and road users,” Al Khazaimi said.

These developments mark a significant step forward in Dubai’s ongoing efforts to enhance its transportation infrastructure and support its growing economy.
