Dubai’s pioneering hydroelectric power plant in Hatta is 94% complete, with a trial run scheduled for Q1 2025, as announced by Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA). The AED1.421 billion pumped-storage plant will have a 250-megawatt capacity, a 1,500-megawatt-hour storage capacity, and an 80-year lifespan, marking the first hydroelectric project in the Arabian Gulf.

DEWA has completed filling the plant’s upper dam and is currently installing generators in preparation for testing. The plant will convert stored water energy into electrical energy within 90 seconds, using a 1.2 km subterranean tunnel, and it will be powered by clean energy from the Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park.

This project aligns with Dubai’s Clean Energy Strategy and Net Zero Carbon Emissions Strategy 2050, aiming to diversify renewable energy sources. It also contributes to sustainable development in Hatta, generating employment for Emiratis and incorporating advanced energy technologies like solar power and green hydrogen production. Completion is anticipated by mid-2025.
