In 2024, Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) completed traffic upgrades across more than 50 locations throughout the emirate, advancing its strategic plan for rapid traffic solutions. These enhancements are designed to optimize the road network, improve traffic flow, and boost safety for road users, all while supporting Dubai’s urban growth and addressing rising traffic volumes.
The traffic improvements are part of RTA’s ongoing commitment to sustainable traffic management and infrastructure development. The completed projects reflect the authority’s dedication to ensuring the smooth movement of vehicles and meeting the city’s transportation needs, in line with Dubai’s ambition to become the world’s top city for living and mobility.
Hussain Al Banna, CEO of RTA’s Traffic and Roads Agency, emphasized the significant impact of the 2024 upgrades. “The traffic solutions implemented this year have made a real difference, improving road network efficiency, reducing travel times by up to 60%, and increasing road capacity by up to 20% in key areas of Dubai,” he said.
Key locations that saw notable improvements included the widening of Beirut Street, upgrades to the intersection of Al Khawaneej Street and Sheikh Zayed bin Hamdan Street, and lane expansions from Al Rebat Street to the Business Bay crossing.
In addition, the exit from Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road to Al Rebat Street was expanded, and a new route was created linking Al Khail Road to Meydan Street.
RTA also focused on traffic solutions near schools, implementing eight improvement projects across 37 schools throughout Dubai. These efforts included widening roads, adding parking spaces, improving entry and exit points, and introducing traffic diversions to reduce congestion. As a result, traffic flow during peak hours improved by 20%, easing commuting for students, parents, and school staff.
In response to the growing population and urban expansion, RTA expanded Exit 55 leading to Al Rebat Street by 600 meters, increasing the number of lanes from two to three. These upgrades have enhanced the road’s capacity to handle 4,500 vehicles per hour, reducing travel time from 10 minutes to just four—a 60% improvement.

To further improve access to the Nad Al Sheba area, RTA introduced a new entry and exit for vehicles coming from Meydan Street. The intersection of Latifa bint Hamdan Street and Nad Al Sheba Street was also converted into a roundabout, leading to a 60% reduction in travel time and better traffic flow.
Looking ahead, RTA plans to complete over 75 more traffic upgrades in 2025. These include expanding and developing vital intersections, adding new entrances and exits in residential and commercial areas, and continuing traffic improvements around schools. These efforts are part of RTA’s vision to make Dubai a global leader in infrastructure quality and sustainable mobility.
