Earthquake Of Magnitude 5.1 Strikes Chile’s Ovalle

A moderate earthquake measuring 5.1 on the Richter scale struck off the southwest coast of the Chilean city of Ovalle early Thursday morning, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS).

The quake’s epicentre was located approximately 66 kilometres southwest of Ovalle, at a depth of 27 kilometres beneath the Earth’s surface.

There were no immediate reports of injuries or damage to infrastructure, and authorities have not issued any tsunami warnings at this time. Emergency response teams are continuing to monitor the situation.

Chile lies on the Pacific Ring of Fire, a region of frequent seismic activity, and is accustomed to both minor and major tremors.
