Emirati coupes in Abu Dhabi will be required to undergo genetic testing as part of a premarital screening process from October 1, says a new directive from the emirate’s health authority.
The premarital screening program is designed to detect infectious diseases and inherited blood disorders. The health department says the testing will help them detect and prevent genetic conditions and make informed choices when deciding to marry. Through this screening, couples will be able to identify if they are carriers of shared genetic mutations that could be passed on to their future children and cause preventable genetic diseases.
H.E. Dr. Noura Al Ghaithi, Undersecretary of DoH, emphasized integrating genetic testing into the Premarital Screening Programme to reduce genetic diseases and empower couples in securing a healthier future for future generations. pic.twitter.com/j9ymKQEFHq

The announcement follows a pilot phase of the project, in which more than 800 couples have taken part since 2022.
The service will be offered in 22 primary care centers across Abu Dhabi, Al Dhafra and Al Ain. The results of the genetic screening will be issued in a period of 14 days.
