Imagine zipping from Abu Dhabi to Dubai in just 57 minutes at speeds of 200 km/h, bypassing the usual heavy traffic. This dream is set to become a reality, as Etihad Rail has revealed the travel times for its highly anticipated passenger trains, which will connect the capital to three other emirates.

Quick Travel Across the Emirates

Etihad Rail has disclosed that the journey from Abu Dhabi to Al Ruwais will take a mere 70 minutes, despite the distance of 240 km between the two locations. Additionally, the trip from Abu Dhabi to the eastern emirate of Fujairah will take 105 minutes. Authorities are expected to announce further destinations and timings in the near future.

This high-tech passenger rail service will connect 11 cities and regions across the UAE, spanning from Al Sila to Fujairah. Key stops will include Ruwais, Al Mirfa, Sharjah, Al Dhaid, Abu Dhabi, and Dubai. So far, two passenger stations have been confirmed: one in Sakamkam (Fujairah) and another in Sharjah, University City.

Anticipated Launch and Capacity

Etihad Rail is preparing for the launch of its passenger service, with additional announcements anticipated in the coming months. Although a specific launch date has yet to be set, the service is projected to accommodate approximately 36.5 million passengers annually once operational.

Residents of the UAE had a sneak peek of the highly anticipated passenger trains during a trial journey between Abu Dhabi city and the Al Dhannah region in January 2024. Recent videos and photos showcased the sleek trains traveling along the desert railway.

Modern Train Interiors

The interiors of these passenger trains are designed for comfort and style. With modern grey seats and an aerodynamic design, the trains boast an appearance reminiscent of high-speed rail systems. The coaches feature a 2+2 seating arrangement and include various seating types similar to airline classes. Electric doors separate compartments, and TV screens display real-time information, such as location and arrival times, in each section of the train.

Comprising 15 luxury carriages, the trains will traverse vibrant urban areas, including Abu Dhabi and Dubai, as well as scenic nature destinations like Fujairah, known for its striking mountains bordering Oman, and the picturesque Liwa Desert, home to its world-famous oasis near Mezeiraa train station.

The Rail Project’s Broader Vision

The AED50 billion UAE Railways Programme, launched in December 2021, represents the largest integrated system for transporting goods and passengers across the nation. This ambitious initiative includes a national network of railway projects linking the emirates and major cities.

The programme encompasses three key components: Freight Rail, Rail Passenger Services, and the Integrated Transportation Service. It aims to create over 9,000 jobs in the railway and supporting sectors by 2030.

Much of the railway infrastructure is already in place, with freight transport having commenced in 2023. The fleet consists of the region’s most modern freight trains, featuring 38 locomotives with a capacity for transporting 60 million tons of goods annually, alongside more than 1,000 multi-purpose vehicles.

Revamped Brand Identity

Recently, Etihad Rail unveiled its new brand identity, which includes a refreshed logo, mission, vision, and core values. The updated logo design draws inspiration from the eye of the falcon, the train silhouette, and the railway track. This emblem represents the falcon’s agility and speed, as well as its ability to reach its targets with determination. The logo encapsulates Etihad Rail’s commitment to excellence and its long-term vision for the future.

As the UAE moves closer to launching its passenger train service, residents can look forward to a more efficient, comfortable, and rapid travel experience across the Emirates.
