Distracted driving to soon end in Dubai

Dubai Police has introduced stricter penalties for distracted driving, tailgating, and sudden lane deviation. Motorists who violate these rules could face vehicle impoundment for up to 30 days.

Residents across Dubai have expressed support for these stricter regulations, hoping that they will prevent drivers from engaging in risky behavior on the roads to save time. The new measures look at improving road safety and reducing the number of accidents. An expert says that distracted driving is a major cause of car accidents, responsible for 26% of unfortunate incidents.

Thomas Edelmann, founder and managing director of Road Safety UAE said, “Distracted driving, especially due to mobile phone use, is by far the biggest culprit on our roads.” He further said that international research shows distracted motorists are four times more likely to be involved in a crash compared to focused drivers. “Those texting while driving are 20 times more likely to be involved in a crash,” he added, reports Khaleej Times.

He reportedly also warned that distracted driving, particularly using mobile phones, is a major cause of traffic accidents as it deviates vision. He believes that strict enforcement of traffic laws is essential to improve road safety and that fines not only have a financial impact but also remind drivers of their responsibility to drive safely.
