Florida is bracing for Hurricane Milton

Hurricane Milton is set to make landfall on Florida’s Gulf Coast as a Category 3 storm, report American news outlets. What is sparking controversy, however, it that Florida Governor Ron DeSantis is reportedly refusing calls about storm recovery from US Vice President Kamala Harris.

It has been less than two weeks since Hurricane Helene pounded Florida’s Big Bend as a Category 4 storm, leaving at least 20 dead in the state. The response to Hurricane Helene has become an intense political issue one month before the presidential election.

NBC news reports, citing a DeSantis aide, that the Republican governor was ignoring the Democratic presidential nominee’s calls because they “seemed political”.

“Kamala was trying to reach out, and we didn’t answer,” the DeSantis aide told NBC.

As Florida braces for another storm, more than 12 million people are under hurricane watches and warnings, and over 8 million people are under tropical storm watches.
