Google has officially confirmed that its AI assistant, Gemini, is expanding beyond smartphones and will soon power cars and smartwatches. Gemini will be integrated into vehicles through Android Auto and will support smartwatches running on Wear OS, marking a significant step toward unifying Google’s AI presence across its entire ecosystem.
The announcement was made by Google CEO Sundar Pichai during the Q1 earnings call for Alphabet, Google’s parent company. “We’re upgrading Google Assistant on mobile devices to Gemini, and later this year we’ll upgrade tablets, cars and devices that connect to your phone, such as headphones and watches,” Pichai said.
His statement highlights Google’s broader ambition to establish Gemini as a central AI across multiple devices — much like Google Assistant once served as a common thread tying together Google’s platforms. By extending Gemini to cars and wearables, Google is signaling that AI will play a much larger role in everyday interactions across its product lineup.
However, users eager to try out the new features will have to be patient. Pichai did not provide a specific launch date for Gemini on Android Auto or Wear OS devices, only stating it would arrive “later this year.”
This timeline leaves room for speculation, but it’s possible the rollout could align with the launch of the next generation of Pixel smartphones, typically expected around August.
Still, the confirmation of Gemini’s expansion points to deeper integration between Android devices, potentially leading to smarter, more seamless interactions whether you’re driving, wearing a smartwatch, or using your phone.
