The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has confirmed two cases of Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) in Karnataka through its routine surveillance for respiratory viral pathogens. The Ministry of Health stated that these cases are part of ongoing efforts to monitor and control respiratory illnesses nationwide.

What Is HMPV?

HMPV is a respiratory virus circulating globally, including in India, and is known to cause respiratory illnesses. Despite the detection, the ICMR clarified there has been no unusual surge in Influenza-Like Illness (ILI) or Severe Acute Respiratory Illness (SARI) cases in the country.

Details of the Detected Cases

  • Case 1: A 3-month-old female infant was diagnosed with HMPV at Baptist Hospital in Bengaluru. She had a history of bronchopneumonia and recovered after treatment.
  • Case 2: An 8-month-old male infant, also admitted to Baptist Hospital, tested positive for HMPV on January 3, 2025. He is recovering and in stable condition.

Neither case had a history of international travel, indicating local transmission.

Health Ministry and Expert Recommendations

The Union Health Ministry is closely monitoring the situation and tracking HMPV circulation trends. Kerala Health Minister Veena George addressed public concerns following reports of an HMPV outbreak in China.

She urged caution for high-risk groups, including the elderly, pregnant women, children, and those with pre-existing conditions, recommending the use of masks and avoiding crowded areas.

“There is no cause for panic, but we must remain vigilant,” she said, emphasizing the importance of keeping symptomatic children at home and ensuring preventive measures like mask-wearing for individuals with respiratory symptoms.

Global Context

The World Health Organization (WHO) is monitoring respiratory infections globally, including the HMPV outbreak in China. Kerala’s health officials noted that respiratory illnesses reported in China may involve HMPV, Influenza A, or certain Covid-19 variants, none of which have shown significant mutations or pandemic potential.

Human Metapneumovirus is a common respiratory virus causing upper respiratory infections, particularly affecting children, the elderly, and those with compromised immune systems. While typically mild, the virus can lead to severe complications in high-risk groups.

Authorities continue to emphasize surveillance, precautionary measures, and timely treatment to manage and mitigate potential risks.
