The Madras High Court on Friday granted interim anticipatory bail to Kunal Kamra, who is facing legal action over his satirical remarks about Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde. The stand-up comedian informed the court that he relocated from Mumbai to Tamil Nadu in 2021 and has been a resident of the state ever since. Expressing concerns about potential arrest by Mumbai Police, he sought legal protection, as reported by PTI.
Mumbai Show Sparks Controversy
The controversy erupted following Kamra’s recent performance at the Habitat Comedy Club in Khar, Mumbai, where he presented a parody song aimed at Shinde. His act triggered a strong response from Shiv Sena supporters, leading to vandalism at the club and the hotel where it is situated.
A complaint was subsequently filed by Shiv Sena MLA Murji Patel, accusing Kamra of making defamatory statements against the deputy CM. Following this, the Khar police registered a case against the comedian.
Mumbai Police Summons Kamra, Arrests Shiv Sena Members
Mumbai Police has issued a second summons, directing Kamra to appear for questioning on March 31. “In the second summons issued to him, Kunal Kamra has been asked to appear before police on March 31,” a police official confirmed to PTI.
Meanwhile, 12 Shiv Sena members, including leader Rahool Kanal, were arrested for vandalizing the studio where Kamra’s show was filmed, as well as the hotel that housed it.
Kamra Responds to Media Outrage
Addressing the ongoing controversy, Kamra took to social media platform X (formerly Twitter) to express his views on the media’s role in political discourse.
“To all those hounding for a quote—The mainstream media at this point is nothing but a miscommunication arm of the ruling party. They are vultures who report on issues that don’t matter to the people of this country. If they all shut shop from tomorrow till eternity, they will be doing a favor to the country, its people & their own children,” Kamra posted.
