On Tuesday, Gaza’s health ministry reported at least 93 Palestinians were killed or missing and dozens wounded in an Israeli strike on a residential building in the northern Gaza town of Beit Lahiya. Medics on site confirmed the death of 20 children among those dead in the Israeli strike.

Ismail Al-Thawabta, director of the Gaza government media office, confirmed the official death toll from the attack as 93. This figure is yet to be disputed by the Israeli military, which frequently contests Palestinian figures. “A number of victims are still under the rubble and on the roads, and ambulance and civil defense crews cannot reach them,” the territory’s health ministry said in a statement.

Matthew Miller, a US State Department spokesperson, called the attack a “horrifying incident with a horrifying result.” Miller informed reporters that the US is actively communicating with Israeli allies to understand the reasons behind the attack.

Video footage obtained by Reuters displayed several bodies wrapped in blankets on the ground outside a bombed four-story building. More bodies and survivors were being pulled from beneath the rubble as neighbors hurried to assist with the rescue efforts.

Israel’s recent aerial attack in northern Gaza comes a day after Israel’s parliament passed a law to ban UNRWA from operating inside Israel, suggesting a worsening of the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
