The Maldives has taken a step toward becoming a smoke-free nation with new legislation that aims to permanently ban cigarette sales to anyone born after January 1, 2007. The law, reportedly set to take effect on November 1, 2025, is part of a broader strategy to phase out smoking across the luxury tourist archipelago.

Announced following a cabinet meeting, as per Economic Times, President Mohamed Muizzu’s office confirmed the landmark move, which would make it illegal for anyone currently under 19 to ever legally purchase tobacco products in the country.

While the penalties for violating the law are yet to be detailed, officials said efforts are underway to amend current tobacco control legislation to support the generational ban.

The Maldives had already taken recent steps to tighten smoking regulations.

In November 2024, the legal age for purchasing tobacco was raised from 18 to 21, and the country imposed a nationwide ban on the import of e-cigarettes and vaping devices—restrictions that apply to both residents and tourists.

The generational ban mirrors proposals in other countries, including the UK, which is still in the process of passing similar legislation. Notably, New Zealand, which became the first country to implement such a ban, reversed its decision in late 2023.

The Maldivian government hopes the measure will curb smoking-related health issues in the long term and encourage a smoke-free future for younger generations.
