Pope Francis was released from Rome’s Gemelli Hospital on Sunday after spending five weeks battling double pneumonia. The 88-year-old pontiff returned to the Vatican, where he will continue his recovery at his residence, Casa Santa Marta.

Before he departed from the hospital, the pope made his first public appearance in weeks, greeting the crowd outside from a hospital balcony. Although he appeared frail and had difficulty speaking, he waved, gave a thumbs-up, and acknowledged a woman holding flowers in the crowd. He also offered a blessing, though it was evident that he had some trouble raising his arms.

Despite his condition, Pope Francis seemed alert, shaking his head when spoken to by an aide. His medical team had announced on Saturday that his condition had stabilized, allowing for his discharge. He was initially admitted to the hospital on February 14 after being diagnosed with a severe respiratory infection, which later developed into pneumonia in both of his lungs. The pontiff is expected to spend at least two months convalescing at Casa Santa Marta.

Before leaving Rome’s hospital, Pope Francis visited the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore, where he offered flowers at the shrine of the Virgin Mary Salus Populi Romani. The basilica holds personal significance for him, as he often visits before and after trips abroad or hospital stays.

Pope Francis has not led the Angelus prayer for the past six Sundays but has continued offering a reflection each week. In his most recent message, he reflected on his time in the hospital, expressing gratitude for the patience and care he received, which he saw as a reflection of God’s love. He also expressed concern over the violence in Gaza, calling for a ceasefire and peace talks between Israel and Hamas.

Despite his extended hospital stay, Pope Francis has continued to show his determination to return to his duties. His doctors have advised him to gradually return to work and avoid large meetings for the time being. He will continue his treatment and physiotherapy as he recovers.

Pope Francis’ departure from the hospital marks a significant step in his recovery, and his return will be welcomed by many around the world. Senior Vatican officials have noted that the pope’s time in the hospital may have led him to reflect on a new stage in his life.
