As part of a strategic partnership, Qatar becomes the first Gulf country to become part of the US visa waiver program. In a joint statement on Tuesday, the US State Department and the Department of Homeland Security announced that Qatari citizens can now apply for visa-free entry into the US by December 1 at the latest.
Antony Blinken, the US Secretary of State, commented on the announcement, “Qatarās fulfillment of the stringent security requirements to join the Visa Waiver Program will deepen our strategic partnership and enhance the flow of people and commerce between our two countries.” He adds, “Qatarās entry will make travel between the United States and Qatar safer, more secure, and easier for both Americans and Qataris.ā This landmark move serves as a direct result of the US recognizing Qatar as a “major, non-NATO allyā in 2022.
Qatar and the US share a longstanding trade and investment relationship that spans more than four decades. The GCC country played a vital role alongside the US in brokering a ceasefire to end Israelās war on the Gaza Strip. On Tuesday, the Biden administration elaborated on these bilateral ties, stating “Qatar has been an exceptional partner for the United States, and our strategic relationship has only grown stronger over the past few years.ā.

An administration official reiterated robust defense ties between the US and Qatar, praising Doha for leading efforts to press the Taliban on human rights in Afghanistan and assisting in Sudan. Qatar becomes the 42nd member of the visa waiver program. To qualify for the program, eligible nations must “meet strict requirements related to law enforcement, border management, and other issues.”
