Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has successfully completed a significant solar energy initiative, installing solar panels across 22 of its buildings and facilities. The project aims to promote renewable energy use and reduce environmental impacts, marking a key milestone in the city’s journey toward sustainability.
As part of its commitment to reducing its carbon footprint, the RTA’s solar energy project aligns with the city’s broader sustainability goals, including the Net Zero Emissions Strategy 2050, Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050, and the Dubai Integrated Energy Strategy 2030.
Promoting Sustainable Development and Clean Energy
Shaikha Ahmed Al Shaikh, Director of Facilities and Establishments at the Corporate Administrative Support Sector at RTA, highlighted that the project is part of Dubai’s vision for sustainable development and reduced carbon emissions. She added that the solar panels are expected to generate approximately 32 million kilowatt-hours annually, leading to a reduction of around 10,000 tons of carbon dioxide emissions each year.
The solar systems have been strategically placed across various RTA locations, including bus depots in Al Quoz, Al Khawaneej, and Al Ruwayyah; passenger bus stations in Satwa and Oud Metha; metro depots; and maintenance workshops in Muhaisnah. This broad implementation is designed to maximize the energy efficiency of the RTA’s operations.
Commitment to Clean Energy Standards
Shaikha Al Shaikh reaffirmed the RTA’s dedication to adhering to the high standards set by the Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) for solar panel installation and distribution. The solar energy systems have been customized to meet the specific conditions of each building, ensuring optimal performance.
Energy production from the solar panels will be monitored in real-time through DEWA’s Shams Dubai calculator, providing live data on the operational efficiency of each site. This initiative is part of the RTA’s ongoing commitment to supporting Dubai’s environmental goals and enhancing the city’s air quality by reducing reliance on traditional energy sources.
As Dubai continues to lead in sustainable urban development, the RTA’s solar energy project underscores the importance of clean energy solutions in shaping a greener future for the city.
