Russia has officially invited Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to attend the Victory Day celebrations in Moscow on May 9, marking 80 years since the Soviet Union’s victory over Nazi Germany in World War II.

Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Andrey Rudenko confirmed the invitation, stating that discussions are ongoing between New Delhi and Moscow, with Russia eager for Modi’s presence at the important event, as per Russian news agency Tass.

The Victory Day parade is a major annual event in Russia, celebrating the German surrender on May 9, 1945, after a Soviet-led offensive.

Along with India, Russia has extended invitations to leaders from other “friendly nations” to join the occasion, which will highlight Russia’s military power and historical significance.

Prime Minister Modi’s last visit to Russia was in July 2024, after nearly five years, during which he held talks with President Vladimir Putin. Modi also invited Putin to visit India, and although Putin accepted, the dates for his visit are yet to be confirmed.
