The Sharjah International Book Fair 2024, SIBF, wrapped up its long-awaited event on November 17. Days filled with a variety of events, conferences, and workshops, over 2,000 authors and publishers participated, making it one of the largest gatherings in the region. The fair showcased an array of intellectual discussions, gathering book lovers, industry professionals, and authors from around the world. Here’s a look at the top highlights.
Mohamed Salah shares his journey

Global football star Mohamed Salah shared how reading and learning have been crucial to his success, highlighting the importance of mental growth alongside athletic achievement. Fans were swooning as he discussed overcoming challenges and how books have motivated him in his career. Having played for clubs like Basel, Chelsea, and Roma, Salah’s time at Liverpool FC saw him win the Premier League, UEFA Champions League, and several individual awards.
Serbia debuts at SIBF

For the first time, Serbian publishers presented their works at SIBF 2024. We spoke to Ines Jovanovic at the fair, who shared, “Geopoetika Publishing was founded 31 years ago and is a true mosaic of Serbian and international contemporary prose. Our collection of Serbian prose in translation began in 2010, and we’ve published a significant number of books. At the Sharjah Book Fair, we are showcasing only this collection, which includes stunning novels for all types of readers. Serbian novels have been translated into Arabic and Persian as well, thanks to these efforts. Geopoetika also won an award in London.”
Echo the Robot sends children into a frenzy

Echo, a life-sized robot, made its debut this year at the Trends Research & Advisory pavilion, joined by Moxy, a smaller female humanoid robot designed to look like a local. Both robots were hands-on on ready to answer questions. We saw scores of students being enamored by its antics. Some also tricked the robot with funny questions, encouraging a huge pool of kids to line up for their chance.
Cooking workshop by chef and author, Halima Boubakri
Chef and author, Halima Boubakri delighted children and visitors alike as she showcased Morocco’s special delicacies with great skill. She guided everyone in tasting the best dishes and also shared insights into her journey. “I like to strike a balance between my passion for cooking and writing,” she said, adding, “It took me years to write my books and get them published.”
Omar Khairat shares his musical journey

Renowned Egyptian composer Omar Khairat captivated the audience at SIBF 2024 by sharing the story of his career and passion for music. He also provided insights into his book, The Rebel: The Life of Omar Khairat. “I’m thrilled to be part of this remarkable event and pleased to share my music and emotions with such an engaged audience,” he said. Reflecting on his early years in a family that deeply valued the arts, particularly music, he spoke about how his passion first blossomed.
Social Media lessons for kids
Tasnim Omran, a Palestinian author, shared insights on the topic of children’s engagement with social media versus reality. Many attendees asked curious questions as she highlighted the importance of reading. In an interaction with The Finance 360, she explained that these are crucial lessons, especially as children today easily hop onto trends, and society often expects them to behave in certain ways.
