South Korea Wildfire Death Toll Rises To 31, Recovery Efforts Continue

The death toll from South Korea’s worst-ever wildfires, which devastated southeastern regions until last week, has climbed to 31, authorities confirmed on Wednesday.

The Ministry of the Interior reported that a person who had been critically injured in the wildfires in North Gyeongsang Province passed away while receiving treatment, bringing the total fatalities to 31. In addition to the deaths, eight individuals remain in serious condition, and 36 others have sustained minor injuries.

The fires caused extensive damage, destroying 4,015 homes, 1,914 agricultural and livestock facilities, seven temples, and 986 other buildings. A total of approximately 48,000 hectares of forest across 11 regions were scorched by the flames, displacing over 3,300 people.

As of Tuesday evening, donations for recovery efforts had reached 76.92 billion won ($52.2 million), highlighting the ongoing support for those affected by the devastating wildfires.
