In a decisive Game 5 on October 21 in Barclays Center, the New York Liberty managed to grab their ever WNBA championship after a phenomenal performance during the series. Â
Overtime to Decide The Winner Â
Liberty managed to win in the final with a score of 67-62 against the Minnesota Lynx. After going 2-2 in the first four games of the series, it only meant the fifth game would be the decider of this year’s winner. The two teams were going back and forth during the fifth game and were giving it their all as the final score was 60-60, which meant it had to go to overtime after Liberty scored two points in the last five seconds to make it a tie. In overtime, New York triumphed as they scored seven points while Minnesota only scored two to make the Liberty champions of the 2024 post-season. Â
27 Years of Wait Â
The WNBA began in 1997, and since then the New York Liberty was never able to win the title, but this year was different as they had a fine roster that can help them win the title. Breanna Stewart, the two-time champion before achieving her third with New York, was a strong addition. Sabrina Ionescu, who was picked first overall in the 2020 draft by Liberty, helped them in crucial times of this series as she was draining three pointers and clutching. Â
FMVP Goes To Jones Â
Jonquel Jones was awarded the FMVP after a performance that New York fans will forever be thankful for. Jones was the leading scorer in game five with 17 points, 5 rebounds, and 1 assist to finish off the night for Liberty. Â
New York Finally Wins A Title Â
This is New York’s first basketball championship since the New York Nets (Brooklyn Nets today) last won a title in 1976 and their first sports championship in over a decade since the New York Giants last won the NFL in 2011.Â
