Republican candidate Donald Trump has offered American EV mastermind, Elon Musk, a Cabinet position or an advisory role in the Republican administration if he returns to the White House for a second term. Trump told Reuters earlier this week that he would “tap Musk for such a position if he would do it.” However, Trump’s generous endorsement of Musk could be met with hesitation from the owner of X (former Twitter) due to Trump’s stringent outlook on tax incentives for EVs in the US.

At a campaign event in York, Pennsylvania, Trump told Reuters that ““tax credits and tax incentives are not generally a very good thing.” Trump intends to abolish the $7,500 tax credit for select new electric vehicles, which could include American homegrown brands like Tesla.

Musk responded to Trump’s valiant call to office on Monday night with a satirical post on X. The post features Musk at a lectern with the words “Department of Government Efficiency” etched onto it, suggesting a possible new addition to Trump’s possible Cabinet. Shortly after Trump’s historic attempted assassination, Elon Musk took to X to openly endorse the Trump campaign—a first for the SpaceX and Tesla CEOs. On August 12th, Musk even suggested a “government efficiency commission” in an X livestream with former president Trump, adding he would be “happy to help out.”

Trump and Musk’s unusual friendship is yet to bear definitive fruit, but conjecture on the possibility of a strategic alliance between America’s most talked-about capitalists is flooding X and other social media platforms.
