In a move to enhance road safety, UAE authorities have implemented strict penalties for those who violate traffic signals. Under Decree No. 30 of 2023, anyone caught running a red light will face significant consequences. Offenders will be fined AED 1000, accumulate 12 black points on their driving record, and have their vehicle impounded for one month, according to a statement by Dubai Police.
This crackdown aims to deter reckless driving and ensure the safety of all road users. Authorities stress that road safety remains a top priority, and they will continue to enforce strict measures to protect lives on the roads.
The rules are even stricter in Abu Dhabi. Under Abu Dhabi’s Law No. 5 of 2020, the fee to release an impounded vehicle is AED50,000. The vehicle will remain in impound for a maximum of 3 months or until the fine is settled. If the fine remains unpaid, the vehicle may be sold through a public auction.
Just a few months back, the Abu Dhabi Police emphasized the dangers of using mobile phones while driving. They specifically warned drivers against browsing social media, making calls, or taking photos while behind the wheel, as these distractions can lead to severe accidents.
“Distracted driving, a leading cause of crashes in the country, is considered a serious traffic offense, punishable by an AED800 fine and four black points,” their statement read.
