In a significant development for UAE-China nuclear cooperation, the Federal Authority for Nuclear Regulation (FANR) in Abu Dhabi recently hosted a high-ranking Chinese delegation. Led by Dong Baotong, Vice Minister of Ecology and Environment and Administrator of China’s National Nuclear Safety Administration (NNSA), the delegation met with FANR’s leadership, including Chairman Abdulla Nasser Al Suwaidi.

The meeting focused on strengthening collaboration in several key areas of nuclear regulation, including knowledge sharing, research and development, and capacity building in nuclear safety and security. Discussions also covered nuclear non-proliferation and regulatory frameworks for advanced nuclear technologies.

This visit builds upon the existing partnership between FANR and NNSA. In November 2024, the two organizations signed a three-year action plan to enhance cooperation across various nuclear regulatory sectors. This agreement follows a 2018 Memorandum of Understanding that emphasized nuclear safety, non-proliferation, and capacity building.

During the visit, FANR officials showcased their regulatory oversight of the Barakah Nuclear Power Plant, while the Chinese delegation shared updates on China’s nuclear programs, reports WAM. The Chinese guests also toured FANR’s Emergency Operations Centre, gaining insights into the UAE’s nuclear emergency preparedness and response system, as well as its efforts to safeguard public and environmental safety.

This high-level exchange underscores the growing importance of international cooperation in nuclear regulation and safety, particularly between the UAE and China, as both nations continue to develop their nuclear energy capabilities.
