Dubai Police have seized 23 vehicles whose drivers used various methods to alter or obscure their license plates in an effort to avoid detection by traffic cameras and enforcement devices. These actions were intended to evade traffic violations and make it harder for traffic departments to identify the vehicles.
Major General Saif Muhair Al Mazrouei, Director of Dubai Police’s General Department of Traffic, highlighted that the police force uses cutting-edge technology and a skilled team to detect license plate tampering attempts. He stressed that individuals attempting to bypass the law in this way will not succeed.
Al Mazrouei noted that Dubai Police monitor both internal and external roads to prevent such violations. He explained, “We’ve seen drivers use chemicals to obscure their plates, bend them, or apply stickers that hinder identification. These are clear traffic violations that will be penalized by law.”
The police also arrested a young man who appeared in a viral video where he was seen removing his license plate while engaging in reckless driving, including running a red light and speeding over 190 km/h. “This individual was also performing dangerous stunts on the road,” Al Mazrouei said. Additionally, another driver was arrested for using a chemical spray to alter his plate, creating the illusion of double digits.
As per Decree No. 30 of 2023 regarding vehicle impoundment, the seized vehicles are now subject to fines of up to Dh50,000 for their release. Al Mazrouei emphasized that Dubai Police remain firm in their stance against those who manipulate the system, as such actions are considered fraud, turning traffic violations into criminal offenses.
