The UAE Ministry of Health and Prevention (MoHAP) has announced the introduction of mandatory genetic testing as part of the premarital screening programme for Emiratis planning to marry. The new initiative will take effect in January 2025 and aims to improve the health of future generations, ensuring long-term wellness for Emirati families.
This initiative followed after a decision made by the Emirates Genome Council, which was approved during the UAE government’s annual meetings, identifies the goal of positioning the UAE as a global leader in healthcare, particularly in genetic disease prevention and reproductive medicine, by using genomic sciences to strengthen partnerships with medical institutions both locally and internationally.
The mandatory genetic testing is designed to help couples identify potential genetic mutations that could be passed on to their future children, leading to preventable genetic diseases. The testing will cover 570 genes linked to over 840 medical conditions, enabling couples to make informed decisions about their family planning.
The UAE’s National Genome Strategy will support the creation of a national genetic database, facilitating early identification of genetic diseases and timely medical intervention. MoHAP is working with various authorities and medical institutions to implement the programme, in line with the UAE Centennial Vision 2071, which aims for sustainable development and an enhanced quality of life.
The testing will be conducted as part of the premarital screening process, in collaboration with the Department of Health – Abu Dhabi, Dubai Health Authority, Emirates Health Services, and other partners.-WAM
